There has always been a debate as to whether Digital Photography is an art or a science. What exactly is the nature of digital photography, find below some arguments for both sides:
A) Art – Majority of people believe photography is an art as it denotes the sentiments. They believe this as they compare the photography with drawing and painting. In a way, digital photography can be compared to painting as it takes exact real images, but it can also alter the same through modern techniques.
To find the model or an object one needs an artistic tendency, so we can say that digital photography can be considered as an art. Through the models selected we can find an artist’s temperament.
The actual object and the way a photograph is shown has a vast difference, this is due to person to person views. Pictures taken out by digital photography never matches with what is seen by our own eyes, this shows the artistic nature of the photographer. Using the digital camera and computer, a person can totally modify the picture to show as per the person’s choice.
B) Science – There is an other debate as to digital photography being science. This is supported by the point that the object that are photographed are present and not an artist’s imaginery one’s like painting or drawing. This point can hold strong as it is the truth that a photographer takes pictures and does not create it.
One more supporting point for digital photography to be science is that scientific techniques are used to modify. Changes that photographers make to better the quality of the pictures are based on a series of methods that can be defined as scientific. In order to repeat the same results, same series of methods can be taken. This constant methodology about digital photography proves it as a science.
While debating on this topic of Photography being an art or a science, there appears to be no end in this as both the sides seems to be true.
How the picture is taken by the photographer should determine the nature of the digital photography. Photography cannot be totally art nor can it be totally science. The true nature of digital photography is illogical. It is true but it is conflicting.
